• Desktop Explorer - Learn How to Operate Your File Manager Gaming Journal //Posted - 4 January 2026

File Explorer is an integral part of our computer. Whether it's your PC or Smartphone, It's always the place for user to navigate what they have on their disk and process everything that their computer can do. Everyone who has used computers for so long won't have a problem with it right? This particular indie game might prove you wrong.

    Desktop Explorer Game Title

    Nice aesthetics hmm

Developed by Recurring Dream Studio, Desktop Explorer is a homage to the late 90s era of desktop computers. The game simulated a desktop PC in that era to the very extreme detail, like how notepad works, classic screensavers, and even has its own Ms Paint (albeit with a very high resolution). You can even code your own webpage with their own version of HTML called STP (short for Storyteller Plus) for those who like to write their own stories with some crazy text effects.

Idk what is going on here.

Right, that's nostalgic but is that it? Well the game has some unique puzzles that force you to use your extensive file manager operating skills™. Renaming files, installing programs, looking at file properties, etc. Believe me when I said it will test your file manager skill, it stumped me a lot and humbled me too (Well maybe it's just a skill issue in my end, though). Fortunately if you are stuck, you have Pizarro, an AI companion (not that kind of AI, okay?) that will give you some hints on what to do.

Desktop Explorer offers a mystery about the life of an abandoned PC user. It slowly reveals what kind of messed up life he had and how it affects us the player through our file searching. The game gives some tech-horror vibes here and there that made me think "Damn, this antagonist is really good at programming" instead of thinking of some supernatural stuffs. But it might be an interesting thing for others.

Desktop Explorer will be released on Steam on Q2 2026. You can wishlist it now and play the demo here! Or.. If you're too lazy to play it on your own, check out my Let's Play on my Let's Play Channel.

Anyway devs, if you are seeing this please give me a free review code. I'll give an honest review article and full playthrough on my channel, I promise
